Smart autofill
This functionality is only available on Tweak Max. Compare the plans here.
Smart autofill fills a form with data that gets through it: an email in the email field, a postal code in the postal code, a country picked in the country list. It walks the happy path of a sign-up, a checkout or a settings page in one click, so you can get to the step you are actually testing. It is the opposite of Edge cases, which fills a form with the data that breaks it.
Using itβ
- Turn it on in Settings > Toolbox: it is off by default.
- Open the toolbox and click the arrow next to the Smart autofill button to pick a mode:
- Fill everything: click any part of the page that holds fields, and every field in it is filled, across every form it holds. A click on a field fills its form, and a click on the page's outermost element fills every form on the page.
- One field at a time: click a field, and only that field is filled.
- Click the Smart autofill button to take the tool out. An outline shows what a click would fill, then turns green once it is filled.
- Click the Smart autofill button again, or press Esc, to put the tool away. What it filled stays.
A submit button or a link keeps the page's own click while the tool is out, so you can fill the form and send it without putting the tool away.
What it fills inβ
Every field is filled from one fictional person, Alex Morgan, so the values agree with each other: the name, the email, the address and the card all belong to the same customer. None of it reaches a real somebody:
- The email is at
example.com, a domain reserved for examples. - The phone number is a 555-01xx number, a range reserved for fiction.
- The card is Stripe's test card,
4242 4242 4242 4242.
The values are the same on every run, so a bug you find comes back the same way.
Each value is one the field accepts:
- Text respects the field's maximum length, its pattern and its type.
- A date in a text field follows the format its placeholder shows, and a phone number fills a placeholder template
like
(555) 555-5555. - A number stays within the field's minimum and maximum.
- A list picks a matching option, or the first real choice, never a "Selectβ¦" prompt.
- Required and consent checkboxes are ticked. Opt-ins, such as a newsletter, are left alone.
- A group of radio buttons gets a pick only when none is picked yet.
- A file field gets a small, valid file of a type the field allows.
Good to knowβ
- Fill everything skips the fields nobody can see, so a hidden field a site uses to catch bots stays empty and the form is not flagged as spam.
- An amber outline means the browser changed a value it was handed.
- Values are entered the way a paste is, so the page reacts as it would to a user.
- To fill the same form with data that breaks it, use Edge cases. To send values the page's own checks would refuse, use Skip form validation.
