Grab text

note

This functionality is available on Tweak Basic and Tweak Max. Compare the plans here.

Grab text copies text the page will not let you copy. Some dashboards open a row the moment you press it, so the email in that row can never be selected; some links are wanted for their label, not their address; some pages switch text selection off altogether. While Grab text is out, the page never sees your pointer, so nothing opens and nothing navigates.

Using it

  1. Turn it on in Settings > Toolbox: it is off by default.
  2. Open the toolbox and click the Grab text button.
  3. Click a line of text to copy it, such as a table cell, a link or a label. An outline shows what a click will copy as you move the pointer.
  4. Or drag across the text you want, the way you would select it. The text is highlighted as you drag, and copied when you let go.

What was copied glows green for a moment, and a Copied tag shows at the pointer. Press Esc, or click the button again, to put the tool away.

Good to know

  • What you copy reads like the screen: each block on its own line, and table cells separated by tabs, so rows you grab from a table paste into a spreadsheet as rows.
  • Form fields give their value. A password field never does.
  • Hidden text and text you redacted are left out.
  • Grab text changes nothing on the page. Put it away and the page responds to clicks as before.
  • If there is no text under the pointer, the tag says No text here.
